Stress is the body's natural defense against predators and danger. It flushes the body with hormones to prepare systems to evade or confront danger. This is known as the "fight-or-flight" mechanism.
Stress is not a useful term for scientists because it is such a highly subjective phenomenon that it defies definition. And if you can’t define stress, how can you possibly measure it?
The term “stress”, as it is currently used was coined by Hans Selye in 1936, who defined it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change”.
When we are faced with a challenge, part of our response is physical. The body activates resources to protect us by preparing us either to stay and fight or to get away as fast as possible.
The body produces larger quantities of the chemicals cortisol, adrenaline, andnoradrenaline. These trigger an increased heart rate, heightened muscle preparedness, sweating, and alertness. All these factors improve the ability to respond to a hazardous or challenging situation.
Factors of the environment that trigger this reaction are called stressors.Examples include noises, aggressive behavior, a speeding car, scary moments in movies, or even going out on a first date. The more stressors we experience, the more stressed we tend to feel.
In everyday terms,it is a feeling that people have when they are overloaded and struggling to cope with demands.
These demands can be related to finances, work, relationships, and other situations, but anything that poses a real or perceived challenge or threat to a person's well-being can cause stress.
Stress is generally considered as bad i.e. Distress but there is another stress i..e Eustress.
Some people would like us to believe that they work better under stress. However, there is some truth to this. We actually benefit from some stress, and it can help us to improve our lives and performance at a given task.
There are many examples when people who have been under stress performed miracuously thereafter.
Amitabh Bachchan almost became bankrupt through his venture ABCL, but sprang back to where he is right now.
Abraham Lincoln got himself best out of stress.
It was stressful Steve Jobs on the banks of Pangong Lake, who revitalised Apple.
Imagine the stress of J. K. Rowling who was rejected 12 times to become the best seller of Harry potter
Colonel Sanders extremely stressed found KFC at the age of 65
Stress has inspired many statements,
“ Adversity causes some to break, others to excel”
“Man needs adversity, They are necessary for health.”
“the harder the difficulties, the more glorious the triumph”
