US & India after Obama's Visit

Factors which bring US & India together

1.    Shared concerns about China’s hegemonic ambitions in Asia
2.    The destabilising impact of radical Islamist terrorism.
3.    India’s size, democratic polity, pluralistic society and vast economic potential, allows US to place a long-term bet on the idea that the rise of India is good for America.
4.    Modi’s sweeping electoral mandate gives him a better shot at achieving India’s goals than any of his recent predecessors.
5.    Modi's preference chose to take the high road towards the US.
6.    Modi’s passionate following among Indian-Americans helped boost his reputation in Washington.
7.    US feels that Modi will revive India’s economy, deepen its engagement with fellow democracies, and steer clear of domestic strife.
Meaning of Nuclear deal
The real Gains from US President Barack Obama's three-day visit to India, was actually not Operationalising the nuclear deal; was not An offer to invest $4 billion, including $2 billion in clean energy; was not Better terms for Indian workers on temporary work visas in the US but something else.
The breakthrough at long last on operationalising the nuclear deal, has many geopolitical connotations.
Indo-US nuclear deal was not all about enhancing India's nuclear power generation. The nuclear deal was all about China. The US wants another power to emerge in Asia with the strategic capability to balance China. Just as the US had wanted China to grow as a counterweight to the Soviet Union, back in the 1970s.
The nuclear deal was the first step to ending India's excommunication from the world of high technology with potential military uses. It was not politic to say that the deal was being struck to counter China. So, enhancing nuclear power was the official pretext.
The deal served not only to end India's technology pariah status, but also to signal to American industry that it was kosher to do business with India, any kind. The current talk of joint development and production of defence equipment would not have been possible without the deal.
India, US and China

While India reaps the benefits of the nuclear deal, it must be clear on one thing. India and China will determine their mutual relations on their own terms, not someone else's. India will rise and that will help make China's rise peaceful as well, meeting Beijing's own goal. This common ground, India must make clear, would be the basis for its relations with China.
