What are some of the things one must know with respect to the national anthem?

India’s national anthem is one of the most sonorous national anthems in the world.
जनगणमन अधिनायक जय हे, भारतभाग्यविधाता।
 पंजाब सिन्धु गुजरात मराठा, द्राविड़ उत्कल बंग।
 विंध्य हिमाचल यमुना गंगा, उच्छल जलधि तरंग।
 तव शुभ नामे जागे, तव शुभ आशिष मागे।
 गाहे तव जयगाथा।
 जनगणमंगलदायक जय हे, भारतभाग्यविधाता।

  1. Jana-Gana-Mana was originally composed in Bengali, by Rabindranath Tagore on 11th December, 1911 and it’s Hindi version was adopted by the constituent assembly as the National Anthem of India on 24th January,1950.
  2. Jana-Gana-Mana was translated to Hindi and Urdu by Abid Ali.
  3. Jana-Gana-Mana is the first of five stanzas of Tagore’s Bengali song Bharat Bhagyo Bidhata.
  4. Jana-Gana-Mana was first publicly sung on 27thDecember,1911 at the Calcutta session of Indian National Congress.
  5. Nehru chose Jana-Gana-Mana as the national anthem as opposed to Vande Mataram as it would be easier for the band to play it. It is set to Raag AlhiyaBilawal.
  6. In 2005, there were voices which wanted to substitute the word 'Sindh' with Kashmir, stating that Sindh was now a part of Pakistan and not India. However SC denied bringing any change to the original wordings of it.
  7. Tagore even translated Jana-Gana-Mana to English which is displayed in the library of Besant Theosophical College, Madanapalle.
